Triage serves to assist patients in timely treatment and care. Triage services are provided by registered nurses who are available in-person and by phone for consultation during regular clinic hours. A triage nurse will acquire information about your health history and symptoms, and work with you to schedule an appointment, provide instructions for treatment at home, or direct you to appropriate treatment centers off campus, as necessary. Performing telephone triage requires the ability to make quick and effective decisions based on limited information. Triage nursing staff follow the Julie Briggs telephone triage protocol when providing phone services. Access to nurse triage services is free and available only to UO students.
When the health services building is closed, University Health Services partners with TeamHealth to provide nurse triage service by phone. TeamHealth is a reputable resource for college health centers across the country. TeamHealth’s nurse triage telephone services provides 24/7 access for patients by trained RN staff who are poised and ready to create an exceptional patient experience, and provide appropriate compassionate advice and health promotion using evidence-based clinical decision tools. TeamHealth’s nurse triage program ensures appropriate ED utilization, prevents unnecessary re-admissions, empowers callers in self-care, and provides a platform that refers callers to other University Health Services resources.
